Cooking near the Bay of Biscaya
The afternoon of March 19th, when normal teachers and students enjoy their spring brake, a group of comenians from Kunda school again started their journey. This time to Spain, to the capital of the province Cantabria Santander. We were invited for a week to a local school IES PEŃACATILLO SANTANDER.
19th-25th March participated in the workshop the school Director Henry Kallaste; teachers Ruth Kaljund, Gunnar Roov, Kaire Reimus and Luule raam. From the students participated Marjorete Orumaa (class 9a), Kristjan Laubholts (class 9b), Ekaterina Skvortsova (Tenth Grade) and Karli Raaga (Eighth Grade).
After a few hours of plane flight and a stopover in Frankfurt we finally arrived at the destination. At the airport we were welcomed by the Spain coordinator Merce and with her organization students were taken to the families and teachers to the hotel.
Nevertheless that we arrived to our new homes quite late at night, we went cheerfully to school in the morning. The excitement was big, because everything was new and unfamiliar. When we arrived to the school we were like stars, everybody were looking at us and shouting „Tere“ and all of it was so enjoyable. The day began with gardening class, where at the beginning we seperated seeds from minerals and later planted them. We hope that next year thanks to us they will grow in to beautiful plants. After that we had free time, we decided to spend it in the city all together. Everything was new and interesting and we were tempted to stay there forever. The most daring among us touched the water in the ocean, but it was still too cold.
On the the next day morning we again set our steps back to school, where in a long time we saw our teachers again, who we didn’t even miss a lot J. We had a tour of the schoolhouse and a small conference, where everyone got a participation note and a souvenir. To the conference were also invited many important people from school and town. Later, we ate lunch at the school restaurant were we tasted very delicious and unique dishes. The third day we also spent at the school restaurant, but this time we were cooking ourselves. Allready in Estonia we prepared a menu from national dishes. We decided to offer foreigners, kama, sprat sandwiches and kaerakäkke (oatcookies). We got to cook all togheter, so we got to try to make Turkey and Polish national dishes and the other way round. There was a lot of fuss at the kitchen, and some countries delayed with their food everybody were allready hungry. When all were finally ready, we could start with eating and of course all were eating with their eyes more than with mouths, because the tables were covered richly.
After a couple of plates of delicacies everybody were sick and promised to start a diet competition. All the dishes tasted to all of the people from other countris and our sandwiches were named a new kind of sushi. We spent the rest of the evening in the city and became acquainted with the sights. The morning of the fourth day, we had (the students) a free day and crazy Estonians went for a swim in the ocean. It was as cold though, but we needed to swim in the ocean. In the afternoon, we went by train to a village where we visted an eco museum and later went to a chocolatecafe to drink hot chocolate and eat churris. The next morning, we continued to tour the villages and visited a gorgeous castle. For lunch, we ate at the local cafe seafood, and other interesting dishes. It was our last day with new friends. We were given free time and we decided to spend it at the outskirts of Biscay, making pictures, and spending time with other young people. The evening was sad, all the teachers and the other students had become so dear to us, that no one could hold back the tears. But hope to see them again wiped the tears, the last night we decided to spend by having fun. All these days we didn’t even get homesick, because the time was flying by so fast. Each day, we learned something new, also in Spanish, and taught everyone else some Estonian words. Later, we already understod jokes in foreign language and we felt very much at home in these moments. For several of our students, it was the first time to participate in such a project, but I've been involved in the Comenius outings before and I can assure, that we will remain friends forever. I also believe that we will be friends forever with them to and we will someday meet again for sure!
